Congratulations to all the winners of this year's Open Call competition! Solo Show Winner 1 - Serena Caulfield Serena Caulfield (b. 1985) is an Irish artist. Through the medium of paint, memories morph into tall tales whilst invented imagery invites novel narratives. Transforming old into new, past to present, absence to presence, here to there, she likes to paint quickly and think slowly. Serena has exhibited regionally and nationally. Recent group shows include the BEEP Painting Biennial in Wales, GENERATION2022: New Irish Painting in Butler Gallery Kilkenny, the Zurich Portrait Prize at the National Gallery of Ireland and Crawford Art Gallery, the 140th Annual Royal Ulster Academy Exhibition in Belfast, the Boyle Arts Festival (2021), and MEET at Periphery Space, Gorey School of Art, (2021). Serena is currently working towards three solo exhibitions at Wexford Arts centre and Ballina Arts Centre in Spring 2023 and her debut solo show with Hang Tough Contemporary in Autumn 2023. Recent awards include The Arts Council of Ireland Visual Arts Bursary, Platform 31 Artist Bursary, an Artlinks Visual Arts Bursary and an Arts Council Agility Award. Serena has an MA in Fine Art from NUA, Norwich, UK (2009) and a BA from Gorey School of Art and Wexford Campus School of Art and Design, IT Carlow. Her work is held in Wexford Co. Council collection, and in private and corporate collections nationally and internationally. Solo Show Winner 2 - Paul McGrane McGrane, Paul (b.1991, Dublin) is an artist & curator working in Dublin. He graduated from Technological University Dublin in 2015 with a BA in Fine Art. His practice focuses predominantly on painting and sculpture. His interests lie in places of worship, and how they are designed to channel certain auras that give divine and peaceful energy. Paul also takes inspiration from past and personal memories about family and places he spent time in while growing up. Through painting, Paul uses colour, shapes and motifs. The outcome leads to vague imagery of landscapes and interior patterns that seem both familiar and otherworldly. Solo Show Winner 3 - Sian Costello Sian Costello is a multidisciplinary artist based in a painter’s studio in Limerick City. Through her practice; painting, drawing, and performance, she uses her own body to intertwine the roles of artist and model, using this corporeal research to reflect on her own lived female experience as well as interrogating the legacy of the figurative painting tradition. In paint, pastel, and performance, Costello’s work seeks to establish the importance of a contemporary female reimagining of the traditional artist’s studio. Her current studio practice builds on issues pertaining to femininity, corporeality, and perception raised by her experience as a woman working in a gendered tradition of figurative painting. Using her own body and an immense camera obscura, the artist employs a performative approach in understanding the experience of the model and the overlooked importance of female cooperation and patience in the western painting tradition. In works the scale of history paintings the artist questions the perceived relationship drawn between the effeminate and the frivolous and literally creates space for these superficialities of dress and cosmetics. Painting returns these shared experiences between artist, model and image to the oily language of corporeality, bound together on the canvas in an updated and tangible visual history. Costello graduated Limerick School of Art and Design with a BA in Painting in 2020 and has exhibited nationally and internationally since. Her work is currently on show at Lismore Castle Arts in Girls Girls Girls, curated by Simone Rocha.
